Am I Eligible for a Hyundai Motability Car?
To apply for a car on the Motability Scheme, you must be receiving one of the following government mobility allowances and have at least 12 months of payments remaining when you apply:
Higher Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (HRMC PIP)
This is one of the primary qualifying allowances for the Motability Scheme.
Enhanced Rate Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (ERMC PIP)
This is the equivalent name for the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) used specifically in Scotland.
War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
Recipients of this allowance are eligible to lease a vehicle through the Motability Scheme.
Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
This allowance also qualifies individuals for participation in the Motability Scheme.
Disability Living Allowance (DLA) - Higher Rate Mobility Component
If you are already receiving this allowance (DLA has largely been replaced by PIP), you remain eligible for the Motability Scheme.
Pro Tip: Please note that the Attendance Allowance and the Lower Rate Mobility Component of PIP do not qualify you for the Motability Scheme.
Do I have to Drive the Car?
You do not have to be the driver yourself, and the lease includes insurance for two named drivers.
For instance, here:
- This could be you, a relative, a friend, or a carer.
- Motability permits a third named driver for an extra cost.
- The drivers must be allowed to drive by the insurer.
- The car must be used for the benefit of the disabled person.
How Does the Motability Payment Work?
The cost of your Hyundai Motability car is calculated in one of three ways:
- A. Allowance Only (No Advance Payment)
- B. Allowance Plus Advance Payment
- C. Allowance and a Refund (Rare)
A. Allowance Only (No Advance Payment)
This is the simplest way to lease a car through the Motability Scheme.
Cost Calculation
The total cost of your chosen Hyundai model is equal to or less than the total amount of your eligible mobility allowance paid over the three-year (36-month) lease period.
Upfront Payment
You pay nothing upfront, and there is No Advance Payment required.
Payment Method
All your mobility allowance is paid directly to Motability by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) or Veterans UK for the duration of the lease.
You receive no part of this allowance once the lease begins.
B. Allowance Plus Advance Payment
Here, most of the larger or more expensive Hyundai models will require an Advance Payment (AP).
The AP, for instance, is a one-off, non-refundable sum paid to the Hyundai dealer before you collect the car.
You will then still pay the entire mobility allowance for the three years, plus this upfront sum.
Example: If a car has a £499 Advance Payment, you pay £499 upfront, and Motability takes your full allowance for the 36 months.
C. Allowance and a Refund (Rare)
This is less common with new cars, as here a small portion of your allowance is not required for the car, as here the remaining money is then paid directly to you by the government.
What Hyundai Cars are Available?
Hyundai is an excellent brand for Motability as they offer a wide range of reliable, modern, and practical vehicles, often with great technology that is available on the scheme.

The 6-Step Motability Application Process
Getting your new Hyundai under motability is actually really straightforward.
For instance, here’s the typical journey that you would expect to take:
Step 1, Check Eligibility & Research
To begin with, you first need to confirm your allowance, making sure that you are receiving the correct mobility allowance and have a minimum of 12 months remaining on it.
Once you have it confirmed, you should research models that you are interested in, and contact us to find out the latest Advance Payments and offers, to be able to decide which specific model, such as the KONA or TUCSON, best suits your personal requirements.
Step 2, Test Drive at a Hyundai Dealer
We can then arrange a test drive of the exact model you want to drive and get you booked in with our Motability Specialist.
They can also explain any adaptations you might need to make your life easier, as well that are also available to you, at this stage.
Step 3, You Place Your Order
When you call up, we will go over any documents that you need to bring with you, such as your Certificate of Entitlement, driving licence (for all named drivers), and proof of address.
Our Hyundai Motability specialist will then help you fill out the application form, and also place the order with Motability, using a secure online system.
If need by we will then take an Advance Payment (if there is one required), to cover the difference that your Motability credit won't cover for the car you would like.
This can usually be paid when the car is ready or on the day of collection.
Step 4, Wait for Your Car
Next, you will receive confirmation from Motability, and we will keep you updated on the build and delivery time.
This can vary from a few weeks to several months, depending on the model you go for and its availability.
Adaptations, Making the Hyundai Your Own
A Motability car can also fit many adaptations to your Hyundai to make driving or accessing the car much easier for you as well.
Many popular adaptations are also fitted for free, and can include:
Driving Adaptations
These change how you operate the controls (e.g., steering aids, left-foot accelerators, or hand controls for braking and accelerating).
Access Adaptations
These help you get into and out of the car (e.g., swivel seats, seat pads).
Stowage Adaptations
These help you lift and secure a wheelchair or scooter (e.g., boot hoists).
Pro Tip: Always discuss your specific needs with our Hyundai Motability Specialist during your test drive to make sure you get the most out of your car.
What Happens at the End of the Lease?
Towards the end of your 36-month lease, you have three simple options to choose from.
These include, for instance:
Get a New Car
Place an order for a brand-new Motability car. You'll simply hand your old Hyundai back to the dealer when the new one is delivered.
Extend the Lease
Motability may offer you the option to keep your current Hyundai for a further 12 or 24 months, particularly if it's in excellent condition and has low mileage.
Leave the Scheme
Hand the car back and receive your mobility allowance directly again.
Pro Tip: If you've looked after your car, you may be eligible for a Good Condition Payment (GCP) from Motability when you return it.
Charging Solutions and Home Chargepoints for Electric Hyundai
If you choose an electric Hyundai model like the KONA Electric on the Motability Scheme, charging is made simple as well.
As here the scheme supports you with two main charging options:
Complimentary Home Chargepoint
For customers leasing their first fully electric car on the scheme who have off-street parking (like a driveway or garage), Motability will arrange and cover the cost of a standard installation of a home chargepoint.
This is generally the most cost-effective way to manage your charging costs.
Public Charging
If you cannot have a home chargepoint installed at your residence, Motability will provide you with a subscription to the BP Pulse network of over 9,000 public charging stations.
Additionally, you gain exclusive access to the 'Go with the Motability Scheme' app, which gives you simple access to over 65,000 chargepoints across the UK.
Charger Compatability
Hyundai electric vehicles are compatible with various public chargers, including ultra-fast chargers (like the 350kW charger variety often found on the IONITY network), which can significantly reduce charging times on long journeys.
The Charge myHyundai app also offers a convenient single-payment solution to access a wide network of public chargers across the UK and Europe.
Remember to discuss your specific parking and grid connection with your Hyundai Motability specialist to ensure the best charging solution is arranged for your new electric car.
So is Hyundai Motability Right For You?
As you can now see, the Hyundai Motability Scheme offers you a very simple, stress-free way to lease a brand-new car in the UK by exchanging your eligible mobility allowance.
This three-year package includes comprehensive insurance, all servicing, maintenance, and RAC breakdown cover, removing the usual financial worries of running a car.
To qualify, you must receive a specific government mobility allowance, like the Higher Rate Mobility Component of PIP, with at least 12 months remaining.
The scheme covers the cost using your allowance, sometimes requiring an Advance Payment for larger models like the KONA or TUCSON. You can also name two drivers and have useful adaptations fitted, often for free, making it a worry-free way to gain independence.
